Milt Kahl Day

These gems are from the collection of the animator Avi Blyer.   These are two of my all time favorite animated characters.  The subtlety of the tiger's animation and the way Kaa, the snake is animated are masterfully done.  Milt said he studied footage of tigers for about two or three weeks and that was enough for him to start working on Shere Kahn.
A big thanks  to Avi for sharing these with us.

  3. edhead,

Good question, I had not notice it before. If it is not a mistake, maybe is some kind of stagger like you said but I have to see the animation again.
I will try to find out.
    Good catch.

  4. Hi Sandro, I imagine that drawings were redrawn by a assitents.
And Milt been very nervous about it!
Details are drawn very bad, look at the mouth and feet of the Shere khan, I'm sure that in the ruff of Milt was much better!

  5. Paulo,

You are right about it. I took a better look at Shere Kahn and I think it might be an inbetween drawing or a tracing, definitely not by Milt.
    Still a great drawing, though.

  7. Kaa is definitely a Milt's key drawing. His assistant completed it by adding the details on the belly and spots.

  8. It still amazes me that Milt could keep all those stripes straight on Shere Khan. He had a great knack for quirky, fun designs. Thanks for sharing!

  9. Hey, Sandro. I come to the site regularly, however this is the first time I'm writing. I have a question. Did you do work on the recent Bluth project, "tapper" Gary said that they got some of their old crew to work on the game. And some of the characters look like they were done by you. Especially, the promo pic of all of them at the bar. Just wondering. -joel

  10. Hi aj,

No, I had nothing to do with the project. The animation you liked must have been done by my friend Len Simon, who's a great animator.

    Cheers.

  11. Ive always loved Kaa's animation. Not just how his head is mostly all mouth and eyes, but how his body moves. How you never see it fully. And SPECIALLY how it moves when Kahn tickles him.
