Milt Kahl Day 11

The animation and design of Shere Khan is what I consider perfection. It is such a complex but appealing design that only Milt could do and it is amazing to me that he could caricature a tiger in such way.
In the animation, Milt got so subtle in some scenes that makes me puzzled when I try to analyse it . It is a tour de force in animation that will never be equaled.

  1. When I looked at this at the stage I'm at now my brain almost explodes.

  2. These scans you show, I'm curious, do you think/know/believe these to be roughs or clean ups for transfer to cells?

I mean what do you think Milt's process was like, do you think he just drew out his scenes like this, to this degree of refined draftsmanship?

I wonder how many passes he took on his Kahn scenes.

I know it wasn't like today with scene machines and pencil testing software, they had to wait overnight for processing the film before the sweatbox the next day to see it at full speed 24fps.

I just wonder what it was like watching a Milt scene go from blank paper to celluloid.

Wouldn't it be something to be a fly on that wall.

  3. Hey Jason,

I am going to post some Milt's first passes and show step by step, more or less, the way he approached a scene and how he left his drawings for his assistants.
It should be very informative and I just need a few days to prepare it.
    Be on the look out!
    Best.

  5. The thing to about Milt Kahls designs is that you can see him in the tiger as well as the voice actor George Sanders, if I spelt that right. And it blended so beautifully.
